I have lost my pet

Time is of the essence in reporting a lost pet. Many people take a found pet inside their home or yard and don't notify a shelter. Don't give up - it sometimes takes weeks to be reunited.

1. Check with your neighborhood first, asking if your pet has been seen.

2. Find photos of your pet. Be sure to have a face and a side view.

3. Complete this online 'lost petform and include a photo.

4. Notify your pet's microchip company to flag your pet as lost. We use AKCreunite.com at our shelter. At this time be sure to update your contact information. If you adopted from HTCAS, your dog is microchipped. If you don't know your dog's microchip info, please contact us

5. Register and upload a head shot of your lost pet to petcolovelost.org a photo facial recognition system.

6. After filling out the lost pet report, please also post your pet on neighborhood social media and neighborhood lost and found pet pages below. Be sure to include cross streets of the last known location.

I have found a Stray Pet

Have you found a dog or cat in Trousdale County?

*Please NOTE: Pets found outside the county are not accepted. You must provide residency, or location in Trousdale County. Once you pick up an animal it is YOUR responsibility to arrange accommodations for the animal. The shelter is a closed intake facility, and we reserve the right to decline intake. We are NOT animal control. In the State of Tennessee, we do have a leash law! That is for the state not just for the city limits or county.

Most animals are likely, out for a walk, and NOT a STRAY.  Many pets don't always get back home due to the finder assuming the animal was abandoned or dumped, when in fact many times the pet accidentally had gotten out. Their family may be looking for their pet but doesn't know where to look. It doesn't take long for a pet to look neglected and may appear frightened or skittish, given the impression that they were abused or abandoned.

Remember: You may find their family, if you follow these steps. We may be able to reunite pets with families without a trip to the shelter. We only take found pets (strays) Monday, Wednesday, and Friday by appointment only.  NO STRAYS ACCEPTED ON SATURDAY OR SUNDAY.

*If the dog is aggressive, or you are physically unable to care for the dog or if the dog appears to need emergency vet care, please call (615) 680-4022.

STEPS TO REUNITE PETS & OWNERS:

1 Secure the dog, assess injuries and provide water.  â€‹Please remember that even though this dog seems friendly, you do not know anything about it. Please quarantine from your pets and children, not because the animal is bad, but you want to keep your vetted pets from contracting anything, also this dog or cat may not be other dog or cat, socialized.

2. Check for a microchip tag, rabies, name tag, or another identification tag such as byte tag. Call and message the owners. OR call Trousdale County Animal Services (615) 374-0330, with the rabies tag number.

3. Have pet checked for a microchip at HTC animal shelter or the Vet's office. If a chip is found, use this link to find the registered owner.

4. Take a photo of the animal. Be sure to be in good light, get a front face and side photo.

5. Please complete this Found Pet online form and include a photo

6. Register and upload a photo of the found pet to PetcoLoveLost.org.

7. Register and upload a photo of the pet to Nextdoor.com

After filling out our Found pet form, also post a photo to found pet on local lost and found social media pages.

*Tip. Do not mention all details about animal. The goal is to locate the owner, not to find it a new home. If you are contacted by another person claiming to be the owner, be sure to ask for proof of ownership, vet records, even photos before returning the pet. If you aren't sure about what to do, please contact Htc animal shelter for help.

8. Post signs in your neighborhood. Include a photo of your pet and your contact information or shelter where the pet has been taken.

9. If owner is not found, you may bring the stray dog to the shelter. Call for appointment (615) 680-4022.
